The Directors of The Wartburg invite you to become a member of the Founders.

The Founders
The Founders was established to encourage and honor those who contribute $100 or more annually toward the support and expansion of Wartburg services. As a Founder, your gift will directly impact those whom The Wartburg Adult Care Community serves. Your gift will not only go towards the support and expansion of Wartburg services, but it will help to provide the “extras” that make life at The Wartburg so special.

The Wartburg Adult Care Community is a special place! Founded as an expression of compassion and generosity, its history dates back over 130 years. First known as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School, this ministry was established in 1866 by the Reverend William Alfred Passavant, a Lutheran pastor, who was moved to help homeless children, many orphaned by the Civil War.

In an effort to garner support for the children’s cause, Passavant brought his vision of creating a loving home for the orphans to the church and community. Among the first to respond were Peter and William Moller, two brothers who prospered in the sugar business and John Roebling, designer of the Brooklyn Bridge. These and other early givers provided the seed money to make Passavant’s dream a reality.

Thirty years later the need to provide care for the elderly became evident to The Wartburg Board. A generous donation from John D. and Anna M. Heins, in memory of their daughter Mary Louise, made possible the construction of the Marie Louise Heins Home, the first home for senior adults on campus. Caring service to senior adults continues today in all of the Wartburg programs.

A Lutheran Ministry Serving All Faiths
As the focus of the Wartburg’s mission has changed from children to the needs of the elderly, a rich tradition of providing charitable care for those in need has been continued. Qualifying residents who have outlived their resources and can no longer afford to pay for their care, continue to live with dignity thanks to the generous support from donors who believe in our mission and ministry. Charitable care also provides for our residents’ additional needs such as clothing, personal items, special events and outings and transportation for medical needs. Spiritual care and nurture has always been central to the mission of The Wartburg. The Wartburg chaplain and the spiritual care program touch the lives of residents, their families and the staff. Charitable contributions support the spiritual care program.
